Soundings

Robert Motherwell said, “One of the most striking of Abstract Art’s appearance is her nakedness, an art stripped bare.”  He describes whole worlds taken away by the painter and what that painter finds left exposed is Mysticism.

Soundings refers to the probing of an environment by sending out some kind of stimulus.  The stimulus can be a pencil line like Bridget Riley’s comment that there was an eye at the end of her pencil searching.  The stimulus can be the faintest wash, yet it has great power.  Or the stimulus can be a dark graininess that seems to say, “Peer into the deepness that seeps into the paper.” These deepest tones subsume into the paper, hold space, and have presence.  The Creamy white gouache veils and reshapes forms helping to make compositions into reflections on light in a wide arena of Benthic, Atmospheric, and Iconic images.

Working mainly on composition, and this ‘stripping away’ led to many  ‘impositions’ on the paper, including crosses that have a vertical and a horizontal that is so smack dab on the picture plane I had to keep them.
