Life and Times

As an artist and as a citizen of the world, I am attracted to the power of images that call forth social issues. When I painted “Freedom”, Edward Snowden had just leaked classified information from the US National Security Agency of the mass surveillance of US citizens. This release of information prompted me to include a symbol of freedom, the Statue of Liberty, and a symbol of mass information, the iPhone, in my painting. Images and concepts from the history of art also interest me. Courbet’s painting, “The Interior of My Studio”, is a stage set with a model and a painter painting the model. Courbet’s painting prompted my painting, “Art in Time”. “Art in Time” takes the artist as a young man to the artist as an old man painting in his studio.

Images I observed while traveling also led me to an image such as “The Sea of Galilee”. “The Sea of Galilee” was prompted by watching the boats on shore with the sun going down over the Galilee.

For me a merging of painterly expressiveness appropriate to monumental subjects and monumental scale is very important. I draw upon lessons learned from other artists such as Beckman, Matisse and Picasso.

My paintings evolve through change. The image on the canvas arises out of the struggle with the paint. I paint from life, drawings and photographs. Generally, I arrange and rearrange forms in a shallow space. During the process of arranging, I modify forms in size and shape in order to find new ghosts of perceptual reality.

Pigment is applied with brushes, painting knives and rags. I alternate very active areas with flat areas on the canvas. Warm and cool colors as well as light and dark values live next to one another. Usually one color dominates the finished painting. The surface energy, texture and color hopefully combine to arrive at my searchings’ next conclusion
