Under the Influence of Fireflies

My work is about sensing the intimacy between color and light as well as discovering profoundly beautiful, complex geometric structures and patterns in nature. The emotional and intellectual painting process begins based on these initial observations.

There is no formula, but I do base my compositions (with a few exceptions) using a circle and a square motif within the rectangular format of the painting surface. Once the initial layout has been drawn, I proceed by employing a variety of methods such as pouring transparent layers of acrylic pigment over colorful Mexican oil table cloths stretched and glued over a wood panel. Additional collaged materials are often glued to these surfaces.

Memories of Mexico's rain forests haunt me with their unique array of plant and insect life. I shall never forget seeing fireflies on a moist, tropical night in the jungle.
