JAMES FARRINGTON
September 9 – October 7, 2017

Paintings

The show title “Paintings” may be an understatement in the case of James Farrington. Farrington’s art is sticky and gooey, with a cherry on top. His work seems to grow before your eyes, oozing off the canvas, dripping, globbing, and consuming anything and everything in its path. Visiting the artist’s studio you may experience the uneasy feeling that if you stand still too long you will find yourself encased in paint. This is wonderfully obsessive, no-holds-barred painting. For Farrington, whatever’s in reach counts as inspiration and fair game. Whether fervently jotting numbers and equations or gluing together studio trash, this is passionate work with an underlying wry wit and idiosyncratic language all its own.

“Everybody makes and has need of making a world other than the one he sees.”
The Notebooks of Joseph Jobert, 1800, Paul Auster translation.

“In the mid to late nineties I retreated to my studio and began to grapple with the figurative work with which I had been engaged. Some years of flailing about on the canvas passed. One day I saw them: the half dozen shish kabob sticks, used for mixing color, jammed into styrofoam, caught my eye; something alien showed me a little ankle, so to speak. I changed course then and there and began exploring a new landscape. Without any internal fanfare, I abandoned working the figure on canvas - something I never expected to do - and before long, illegible whole number scratchpads emerged, lighting up the workplace. Eventually, the idea of faces came knocking, and were invited back in.

“Before you are some of what has fallen and followed from all of that.

“The pieces are water based mixed media, including acrylic paint, acrylic ink, india ink, crayon, pencil gel medium, gloss medium, wood, paper string, studio flotsam.”
