LAURA DANIELSON - Material Transformations
June 19 – July 13. 2019

FIG is pleased to announce our first solo exhibition with artist Laura Danielson which will be featuring a selection of collage works from recent years. Collage is a natural medium for artists who love exploring juxtaposition, free-association, narrative and storytelling, wit and humor. With her background in mathematics and library science, it might be assumed Danielson gravitates to organization and logic, but her many years of art study and long association with artists has also greatly inspired her love for the spontaneity of visual creativity. Danielson’s collage works are a timeless journey; classical and elegant in their presentation, but equally intelligent, amusing, and magical. Danielson makes smart, joyful work that is rich with literary allusions, visual puzzles and puns and unexpected mash-ups.

“I have a passion for working with collage/mixed media. My works are small, many no larger than 5” x 7” in size. Printed words are often used as a form of visual poetry. Color, words, and travel are major sources of inspiration."

“My collage explorations began over 30 years ago with a gift of papers from Japan that a friend had collected during his travels. I created my first collages with these papers, and realized that this new medium was a vehicle with vast potential for creative exploration and self-expression. Over the years, I collected a variety of materials from my travels and from local sources and studied the works of other collage and assemblage artists for inspiration and techniques. My artistic influences and guides include Kurt Schwitters, Robert Motherwell, John Marin, Rosalie Gascoigne, Arthur Dove, William Dole, Van Gogh, Matisse, and Sam Amato. The works in my current show are the result of this creative journey.”

Laura Danielson is a graduate of UC Santa Cruz (B.A. Mathematics) and UCLA (M.L.S.). She has studied drawing and painting at Art Center, UC Santa Cruz, Cabrillo College, and UCLA Extension. For many years she participated in an artist group under the direction of Professor Sam Amato.
